3D World Social Etiquette

October 27, 2010

3D virtual worlds are populated by millions of Internet users.  They flock to these sites to spend time in chat rooms, playing avatar games, and customizing their avatar and living spaces, releasing their creative juices. Many come to flirt and be flirted with in a safe environment. Visitors in virtual worlds often feel free to say and do things they wouldn’t do in real life.  No one even knows who you really are here, so it’s okay to indulge your fantasies.

Even in a virtual world, however, etiquette plays a role.  Just like in real life, you build a reputation online.  Spending time in a virtual world is more fun if you are liked and accepted, not avoided or reported for bad behavior.

Etiquette in a 3D world really is similar to that you practice in real life.  A little common courtesy goes a long way. Remember the following tips and you should get along fine.

Don’t be Mean

There is no reason to make nasty or belittling remarks to anyone.  Remember, your virtual world is a global environment and you are part of a community made up of every race, color, and sex.  Making prejudice remarks or trying to incite trouble is not only rude, it is just plain stupid.

Be Patient with Newcomers

If you have been a member of a virtual community for awhile, you may find it annoying when newbies come along and flounder around.  Keep in mind, though, that every experienced player was once a beginner.  No one came into this virtual society knowing everything.  Help the newcomers out and practice a little patience.

No Still Means No

Even though many of the people in your virtual world may have joined to have sexy, exciting experiences, it doesn’t mean everyone wants to participate in those type activities.  If you approach a person and try to establish a more intimate virtual relationship, respect the other party’s wishes.  If that person does not want to move in that direction, don’t force the issue.  If someone tells you they are not interested in going there, move on.  There are thousands of other users who may feel differently. Try someone else.

Being a member of a virtual society is much like belonging to any other society.  Common courtesy is expected and appreciated.  Remember to say please and thank you, respect each other’s rights, and enjoy each other’s company.  After all, you traveled to this 3D world to relax and have fun.  Remembering to use a few manners will only enhance that experience.
