How Does The E Cigarette Work?

February 11, 2010

If you’ve just heard about the e cigarette you may be asking yourself, just exactly how does this incredible technological device work?

The answer will depend somewhat on the design and model you choose, but essentially the basic concept is the same for all. An e cigarette does not use tobacco and does not burn anything, instead it is a device that has two or three basic parts, namely an atomizer, a battery that heats the e-liquid that contains nicotine (and perhaps a flavor), and either a cartridge that dispenses the liquid and is absorbed onto a nicotine pad or a cartridge that acts as an atomizer, or vaporizer and mouthpiece all in one.

The idea is that the battery activates the heating element that creates a vapor from the nicotine laced e-liquid that is then inhaled as a mist much as smoker might inhale the smoke of a cigarette. Some e cigs work on the principal that the vaporizer is activated by the act of inhaling while others are activated by pressing a button to get a hit of vapor.

There are several styles and different brands and manufacturers. Naturally some are better than others. The basic choices are large Screw Driver styles that have powerful vapor but are not very much like a real cigarette is size or shape. Others are mini cigarettes or long and thin devices that resemble an analogue cig but may be even more fashionable by being colored or black or platinum or bronze. Other e cigarettes are very similar in look and size and feel to the tobacco burning smokes you may be used to, and are simple two pieces devices that are easy to use. All e cigarettes have batteries that are either rechargeable to can be plugged into a USB outlet or a car plug.

The best way to know how an electronic cigarette works is to try one and find out for yourself. They are readily available through many retailers online.
