GPS used to be an up an coming technology just a few years ago. The stocks of GPS companies like Garmin going up as their units were being supplied in rental automobiles for the first time. You could read something about GPS almost everyday in the newspapers. But now, have you noticed that there is not much buzz about it anymore?
Firms like Mio GPS were busy carving out their niche and challenging the bigger GPS makers, particularly Tom Tom and Garmin. Lately though, nothing much has happened and while GPS units are still used, there definitely isn’t any hype about the technology anymore. The stock market has taken a bite out of GPS maker’s shares as gross sales have leveled off as the market has become saturated.
The technology of GPS could be very useful for a lot of things but it appears that most people don’t have much day to day need for it. Once you put a unit in your car, you don’t have that any other reason to purchase more units. Yes, they can be nice for things like small planes, climbing, boats, and exploring but not that many individuals go out and get lost on an common basis. So, it appears that sales of GPS units have slowed down considerably.
One use for them that is really desired is in phones for kids. Having a GPS unit in your kid’s phone could make dad and mom sleep better at night time in case the child gets lost. But of course, it would only be useful in that situation if the child keeps the phone with them.
New and better technology comes at us very quickly now days and GPS is just another one of those things that caught on for a while but then fizzled out. It will be used for quite a while longer but it is simply not something that the masses want and thus the excitement died down quickly.
