Tough Protection for Tough Laptops

April 7, 2010

When most people think about getting protective bags for their laptops they think mainly about simple padded laptop bags that will protect against normal bangs or scratches. Yet there are some people out there who need far more protection for their computers. Laptops are increasingly being seen as essential navigation and communication devices by yachtsmen and other boaters. They use them to download weather forecasts, map updates and e-mails. Yet their computers will often be exposed to moisture and humidity as well as the risk of being bashed about in rough seas.

People who work outdoors a lot such as surveyors and geologists also need more protection for their computers than most bags will provide. They want something dustproof and waterproof too.

Finally there is the military. More and more computers are being found on the battlefield. In many cases these are official issue for controlling demining robots or flying UAVs. But ordinary soldiers also carry their computers or x-boxes into war zones so they can stay in touch with home or chill out watching movies and playing games between combat missions.

All of these sorts of people could learn something from camera and television crews who have learned how to carry sensitive recording and editing equipment into inhospitable environments. For years they used aluminum cases to carry their gear. Yet in recent years there has been a shift. One secret that many broadcast journalists have is that they use hard Pelican cases to protect their gear. These ingenious cases are waterproof, dustproof and practically indestructible. They are also padded inside so that you can ship valuable stuff by air and no matter how roughly it gets loaded and unloaded from the airplane, you know your stuff is protected. Best of all they are pretty light and are made from really tough plastics and resins so they are also a bit shock absorbing and don’t dent easily like the older aluminum ones used to. They also come in a range of sizes and styles so that one can carry a computer from the field and into the board room without it looking out of place.
